Diphtheria is a sickness caused by tiny germs. These germs are called bacteria.

Most people do not feel sick right away. Symptoms usually start two to five days after you catch it. You might get a sore throat or a fever.

In some cases, the illness gets very bad. A thick, grey patch can grow in the throat. This patch is called a pseudomembrane. It is tough and leathery. This patch can block the airway. It makes it hard to breathe or swallow. The neck can also swell up. People sometimes call this a "bull neck."

The germs make a poison called a toxin. This toxin can travel through the blood. It can hurt the heart or the kidneys. It can even cause paralysis, which means parts of the body cannot move.

We can stop this sickness with a vaccine. A vaccine is a shot that helps your body stay safe. Most children get these shots to stay well. In 2015, there were 4,500 cases reported around the world. This is much lower than in the past.
