Dysentery

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dysentery is a type of sickness that affects the intestines. It is often called the bloody flux. This illness causes diarrhea that contains visible blood. People with dysentery may also feel fever or abdominal pain. It can make the stomach feel like it is not empty. A major danger is dehydration, which happens when the body loses too much water.

The sickness starts when tiny germs enter the body through the mouth. These germs often hide in contaminated food or water. Some germs are bacteria from a group called Shigella. This specific infection is called shigellosis. Other cases are caused by a tiny living thing called an amoeba. This type is called amoebiasis. Once inside, these germs damage the lining of the intestines. This damage causes swelling and painful muscle cramps.

People have known about dysentery for a very long time. It was described at least as far back as the time of Hippocrates. In 1915, a scientist named Fannie Eleanor Williams studied the disease. She was a medic serving in Greece. She worked with Sir Charles Martin at the Lister Institute. Their research helped people find better ways to test for the illness. This work led to a higher demand for special medical tools.

Numbers show how common these infections can be. Shigella causes about 165 million cases of diarrhea each year. This leads to about 1.1 million deaths every year. Most of these cases happen in the developing world. Amoebiasis affects millions of people and causes over 55,000 deaths annually. This often happens in parts of Africa, Asia, and Central or South America. In some places, half of all diarrhea cases come from these amoebae.

We can prevent dysentery with simple habits. Washing your hands helps keep germs away. It is also important to make sure food is safe to eat. If you travel to high-risk areas, you must be extra careful. If someone gets sick, they need to drink many fluids. Doctors often use an oral rehydration solution to replace lost water. This helps the body recover from the hard job of fighting the infection.
