Giardia duodenalis

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Giardia duodenalis is a tiny living thing called a protozoan parasite. It lives in the small intestine of many different animals. This parasite causes a sickness known as giardiasis. People can feel very sick from this, but some people show no signs at all. It is the most common intestinal parasite found in the United States and Canada.

This parasite has two different ways of living. The first is called a trophozoite, which is a pear-shaped cell. These cells use four pairs of flagella, or tiny tails, to swim. They use a special part called a ventral disc to stick to the gut wall. The second form is a cyst, which is a hard-shelled stage. The cyst is very tough and can survive outside a body for months.

Learning about these tiny shapes has happened for a long time. A drawing by Vilém Lambl from 1859 shows what the parasite looks like. Later, Charles E. Simon made more drawings in 1921. Scientists use special tools to see them clearly today. When scientists stain the trophozoite, it looks like a little smiley face.

Giardia can spread to many people around the world every year. It is estimated to infect over 280 million people each year. This can lead to over 500,000 deaths globally. In the United States, about 20,000 cases are reported every year. The sickness is most common in children aged zero to four. It can also be found in dogs, cats, and even birds.

Most people get sick by drinking water that has not been treated. You might find cysts in lakes, rivers, or even mountain streams. Cysts are very hard to kill with normal water treatments like chlorine. This is why campers should be careful with natural water. The parasite can also live in soil or on food. If you swallow even 10 cysts, you might get sick.
