Parasitic disease

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A parasitic disease is an illness caused by a parasite. A parasite is a living thing that gets food from a host. While it eats, the parasite can cause harm to that host. Scientists who study these living things use the word parasitology.

There are three main groups of these parasites to know. The first group is protozoa, which are tiny single-celled life forms. The second group is helminths, which are larger animals with many cells. The third group is ectoparasites, which live on the surface of the host.

These parasites have different ways of getting what they need to live. Protozoa use ways called pinocytosis and phagocytosis to get nutrients. Helminths in the Cestoidea and Trematoda classes absorb their food. Other helminths, called nematodes, get food by eating it.

Some parasites live inside the body, known as endoparasites. Other parasites, called ectoparasites, stay on the outside of the host. An infection can be acute, which means it starts very fast. It can also be chronic, which means it lasts a long time.

People can catch these diseases in many different ways. You might get sick from eating undercooked food or unwashed fruit. Drinking water that is not clean can also spread parasites. Some people get sick from bug bites or contact with animals.

Many parasites use something called a vector to move. A vector is a vessel that carries the parasite to a new host. Malaria, Lyme disease, and leishmaniasis are examples of diseases that use vectors. A parasite is only infectious during specific stages of its life.

Many parasitic diseases are found in specific parts of the world. They are very common in warm areas near the equator. This is because the warm temperatures help them thrive.

In the United States, being Hispanic or African-American can be a risk factor. People without indoor bathrooms or clean water face more risks too. Symptoms can be hard to spot because they look like the flu. A person might have a fever, a headache, or muscle pain. They might also have stomach pain, vomiting, or nausea.

Doctors have many ways to find out if a parasite is the cause. They often start by looking at the symptoms a person has. They might use a stool test or a blood test.

Sometimes they use an X-ray, a CT scan, or an MRI. Doctors may even use a colonoscopy or an endoscopy to look inside. Most of these infections are treated with antiparasitic drugs. Some scientists have even thought about using viruses to treat protozoa. This helps us understand how to keep our bodies healthy.
