Infestation

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An infestation happens when pests overrun a host. A host is a living thing. This term describes the state of being invaded. It can also mean the actual living things themselves. These pests live on or inside the host. It is a big event for the host.

There are two main ways these pests live. Some live on the surface of the host. These are called ectoparasites. They stay primarily on the outside. Other pests live within the host. These are called endoparasites. This is how they find their home.

We can name specific types of these pests. Mites and ticks are examples of ectoparasites. Head lice and bed bugs are also in this group. Some things like porocephaliasis can penetrate deeply. Internal pests often include many types of worms. Swimmer's itch stays near the surface.

Scientists use very specific words for these things. They use infestation for animals like arthropods. This group includes mites, ticks, and lice. They also use it for worms. They do not use it for germs. This includes fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Those are called infections.

Knowing these words helps us tell things apart. Some people use infestation only for outside pests. They call inside pests infections. This can be a bit confusing. It is a way to group living things. It helps us see where they live. We can study how they act.
