Infestation

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An infestation happens when pests take over a host. A host is a living thing. These pests can live on or inside the host.

Some pests live on the outside. We call these ectoparasites. These are tiny animals that live on the surface. Examples include mites, ticks, and head lice. Bed bugs are also in this group.

Other pests live on the inside. We call these endoparasites. These pests live within the host. Many types of worms are endoparasites.

Scientists use different words for different things. They call bugs and worms infestations. They do not use this word for germs. This includes fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Those are called infections. Some people only use the word infestation for outside pests. They use the word infection for inside pests. It is important to know the difference.
