Plant pathology is the study of plant diseases. Scientists look at how germs make plants sick. They also study how the world around plants causes harm.

Germs that cause disease are called pathogens. These can be fungi or bacteria. Some are even tiny worms called nematodes. To live, pathogens must break into a plant. They often use enzymes to eat the plant's cell walls. This lets the germs find food inside. Some pathogens also use toxins. Toxins are poisons that can damage the plant.

Other things can harm plants too. These are not caused by germs. For example, frost, floods, or wind can cause damage. This is called an abiotic disorder.

To understand a disease, we use a plant disease triangle. This idea shows three main parts. You need a host plant, a pathogen, and the right environment. If you change one part, you can stop the disease.

Plants have ways to stay healthy. They have tough parts like cell walls to block germs. Some plants even use genes to fight back. Scientists study these plants to grow better crops.
