In biology, a host is a large living thing.

A smaller guest lives on or inside it. The guest gets food and shelter from the host. These relationships can be helpful or harmful.

Some guests help their hosts. This is called mutualism. In mutualism, both partners benefit.

For example, a fungus can live on plant roots. The plant gives the fungus food. The fungus gives the plant nutrients from the soil.

In the ocean, small fish clean larger fish. This is called cleaning symbiosis.

Other guests are not kind. A parasite is a guest that benefits at the host's expense. Some parasites make the host sick. A parasitoid is a special kind of guest. It lives inside a host and eventually causes the host to die.

Some hosts are also called reservoirs.
