This can mean they harm our food, our homes, or our health. Some animals are pests because they bite or sting. Mosquitoes and ticks are examples of this. They can be vectors, which means they carry sickness from one place to another.

Other pests damage things we own. Woodpeckers can peck holes in buildings. Termites can cause serious damage to wood.

Even birds can be pests. Large flocks of starlings can be very noisy. Their droppings are acidic. This means they can wear away stone and metal.

In farming, pests can cause big losses. Insects, mites, and rodents are major pests.

Insects can hurt plants in two ways. They might eat the leaves directly. Or, they might spread germs like viruses. This happens when they bite a plant. Plants have ways to fight back. Some use thorns or spines to stay safe. Others use chemicals to taste bad.

Even plants can be pests if they grow where they should not. For example, the caltrop plant has sharp burrs that can hurt feet.
