Plant pathology

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Plant pathology is the study of plant diseases. It looks at how germs make plants sick. It also studies how the world around plants causes harm. Scientists look at how diseases spread and how they affect humans. They also study how plants can resist these sicknesses. This work helps us manage diseases in our crops.

Many different germs can cause these plant diseases. These are called pathogens. They include fungi, bacteria, and tiny worms called nematodes. Some pathogens use special tools to enter a plant. They use enzymes to break down the plant's cell walls. This helps them reach the food inside the cells. Some also use toxins, which are poisons that damage the plant.

Not all plant problems come from germs. Some problems come from the world around the plant. These are called abiotic disorders. They can be caused by natural things like frost or snow. Floods and poor drainage can also cause harm. Wind and storms can break plants or cause windburn. Even wildfires or lack of nutrients can make a plant look sick.

To understand how a disease happens, we use a concept called the disease triangle. This idea shows three main parts. You need a host plant and a pathogen. You also need the right environment for them to meet. If you change just one part, you can stop the disease. This is a key way to control how sickness spreads.

Plants have their own ways to stay healthy. They have tough layers like cell walls to block germs. They also have tiny guard cells to stop entries. If a germ gets in, the plant uses internal signals to fight back. Scientists use tools like PCR to find these germs quickly. They can even use genetic breeding to make stronger plants. This helps farmers grow better food for everyone.
