A disease is a special condition that changes how a living thing works. It affects the structure or the function of the body. This is different from a sudden injury like a cut or a broken bone. Diseases can change how a person feels in their body or their mind.

Diseases happen in a few different ways. Sometimes, they come from outside the body. These are often caused by pathogens, which are tiny living things like bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Other times, a disease comes from inside the body. This might happen if the immune system does not work correctly. For example, an autoimmune disorder is when the body's own defense system causes problems.

Scientists use a special field called pathology to study these conditions. Pathology is the study of disease itself. One part of this is called etiology. Etiology is the study of what causes a disease to start. Scientists might look at a specific virus to understand a sickness. They want to find the root cause of the problem.

There are many ways to group different diseases. Some are called congenital, which means they are present at birth. Others are acquired, which means they start sometime during a person's life. A disease can be acute, meaning it lasts for a short time. A chronic disease is one that stays for a long time, often six months or more.

Some diseases are even hereditary, which means they can run in families.

Understanding diseases helps us see how our bodies stay healthy. In humans, some diseases are very serious. Ischemic heart disease is one of the deadliest, as it involves blocked blood flow. In developed countries, many people deal with neuropsychiatric conditions like anxiety or depression. These are conditions that affect the mind. Learning about these helps us take better care of ourselves and each other.
