Signs and symptoms

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Our bodies give us clues when we are sick or hurt. Doctors use these clues to find out what is wrong. There are two main types of clues called signs and symptoms. A sign is something objective that a doctor can see or measure. For example, a doctor might see a red rash or a bruise. They can also use tools like a stethoscope to listen to your heart. They might check your blood pressure or use a thermometer. A thermometer can turn a feeling of heat into a measurable sign.

A symptom is different because it is subjective. This means it is something only you can feel. You might tell a doctor that you have a headache. You might feel dizzy or have a pain in your stomach. Symptoms can happen because of an infection or a substance you ate. Sometimes, symptoms are not helpful for finding a specific disease. These are called nonspecific symptoms. Examples include feeling tired or having a loss of appetite. These clues do not point to just one single problem.

Doctors look for special patterns to help them work. A group of signs and symptoms that happen together is called a syndrome. Some syndromes have three parts, which is called a triad. Others might have four parts, called a tetrad, or five parts, called a pentad. One example of a triad is Meltzer's triad. This includes a rash, joint pain, and muscle pain. Another example is Huntington's disease. This disease is known for a triad of motor, cognitive, and psychiatric signs.

Some people show no clues at all. If a person has a disease but feels nothing, they are asymptomatic. This can happen with some cancers or infections. Even if someone is asymptomatic, they might still be able to spread an infection. Doctors can sometimes find these hidden problems using medical scans. Other times, a doctor might find something by accident. This is called an incidental finding. It is like finding a lost toy while you are looking for your shoes.

Clues can also change over time. Some symptoms are dynamic, which means they change. For example, exercise intolerance might happen during a run but stop during rest. Other symptoms are static, meaning they stay the same. Fixed muscle weakness is a static symptom because it does not change with rest. There are also early clues called prodromal symptoms. These appear before the main sickness starts. Measles has a prodromal stage with a cough and fever. Migraines also have a prodromal phase in over half of all cases.
