Heat illness is a group of problems caused by a rising body temperature. It can happen because of the weather or from hard physical work. The most dangerous condition is called heat stroke. This can affect many different parts of the body.

There are many ways the body reacts to high heat. Heat exhaustion can happen first, causing heavy sweating and a fast pulse. This can lead to heat stroke if it is not treated. Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that happen during hard exercise. Heat rash occurs when sweat ducts get blocked under tight clothing. Heat edema causes swelling in the hands, feet, or ankles. This happens because blood vessels widen and hold onto extra water.

People have known about heat illness for a very long time. The Greek doctor Hippocrates wrote about illnesses caused by heat. In the past, people even blamed a tropical fever called calenture. History shows how dangerous heat can be for large groups. Alexander the Great lost two thirds of his army in the Gedrosian desert. His soldiers suffered from heat fatigue and dehydration. This shows that heat has always been a big challenge for humans.

Many people are affected by heat around the world today. Between 2000 and 2019, about 489,000 heat-related deaths happened every year. In Europe, 61,672 excess deaths occurred during the summer of 2022. In the United States, many people are treated in emergency rooms. Football players are at a higher risk for heat illness. In fact, football is 11.4 times more likely to cause heat illness than other sports. August is a very busy month for these types of illnesses.

Staying safe is the best way to handle the heat. You should drink plenty of fluids and electrolytes. Electrolytes are parts of drinks that help the body work well. Sports drinks are a good way to get these. It is also smart to wear loose-fitting clothing to stay cool. You should also get used to the heat slowly. This helps your body adjust to the warmer air.
