Hypothermia is a serious condition that happens when a person's core body temperature drops too low. The name comes from two Greek words: "ypo," meaning under, and "therme," meaning heat. Most people keep a steady temperature through a process called thermoregulation. This is how the body manages its own warmth. When this system fails, the body loses heat faster than it can make it.

This can happen because of cold weather or being in cold water. It can also happen if a person has conditions that make it hard to produce heat.

There are different stages of hypothermia based on how much the temperature drops. In the mild stage, a person might shiver and feel confused. Shivering is a way the body tries to make heat through muscle movement. As it moves to the moderate stage, shivering stops and the person may feel drowsy. They might also have slurred speech or lose fine motor skills. In the severe stage, the person may become unconscious. Their heart rate and breathing will slow down significantly.

At this point, the body's vital systems begin to fail.

Sometimes, the brain gets very confused during severe hypothermia. This can lead to hallucinations, which are seeing things that are not there. Some people experience something called paradoxical undressing. This is when a person takes off their clothes even though they are freezing. This happens because the brain's temperature control center malfunctions. Another behavior is called terminal burrowing. This is when a person tries to hide in small, enclosed spaces like under a bed.

Doctors use different ways to help people get warm again. For mild cases, they might use warm drinks and dry clothing. For moderate cases, they may use heating blankets or warmed fluids through an IV. In very severe cases, doctors might use a machine called ECMO. This machine helps oxygenate the blood outside the body. If a person has no pulse, rescuers use CPR. In the United States, hypothermia causes at least 1,500 deaths every year.

It is more common in males and older people.

It is important to know how fast the cold can work. Heat leaves the body much faster in water than it does in air. For example, water at 50°F can kill an adult in just one hour. Very cold water near freezing can be dangerous in only 15 minutes. During the sinking of the Titanic, most people died within 15 to 30 minutes. History shows how much the cold can impact people. Even famous armies, like Napoleon's, faced huge challenges from the cold.
