A heat wave is a period of unusually hot weather. It lasts for several days or even weeks.

Scientists measure these events by looking at what is normal for that area. What feels hot in a cool place might feel normal in a desert. Because of this, different countries use different rules to define a heat wave. For example, Greece looks for three days of very high temperatures.

In the United Kingdom, the Met Office uses a special watch system. This system helps people get ready for different levels of heat risk.

These events happen because of how air moves in the sky. A high-pressure area forms high up in the atmosphere. This area stays over one region for a long time.

Under high pressure, the air sinks toward the ground. As it sinks, the air warms up and becomes very dry. This process stops clouds from forming in the sky. Without clouds, more sunlight reaches the surface of the Earth. This extra sunlight makes the ground and the air even hotter.

Heat waves have changed quite a bit over the years. Since the 1950s, they have become more frequent and more intense. This change is caused by climate change.

In 2024, the World Meteorological Organization reported record-breaking heat. This happened in places like Europe, North America, and China. Many of these regions saw temperatures go above 45°C. This shows that extreme heat is happening more often around the world.

Extreme heat can be very hard on our world. It can cause crops to fail and start wildfires in dry areas.

Heat waves can also hurt the economy. They can make it harder for people to work or disrupt factories. Sometimes, people use so much air conditioning that the electricity goes out. This can cause widespread outages in many towns. These events show how much heat can change how we live.

Heat waves are also dangerous for our bodies. Humans have a way of staying cool, but extreme heat can overwhelm it.

This can lead to serious health problems like hyperthermia. Even the ocean can experience heat waves. These are called marine heatwaves. They happen when sea temperatures stay unusually warm for a long time. These warm waters can change life in the ocean and harm coral reefs.
