Scientists compare the heat to what is normal for that area. What feels hot in one place might feel normal in another.

Heat waves happen because of high pressure. This is a way that air moves in the sky.

A high pressure area stays over one place for a long time. This area makes the air sink toward the ground. As the air sinks, it warms up and dries out. This stops clouds from forming. Without clouds, more sunlight hits the ground. This makes the earth even hotter.

These events can be hard on our world. They can cause crops to fail or start wildfires. They can also make people sick. Too much heat can overwhelm how our bodies stay cool. In some places, people use more air conditioning. This can lead to power outages.
