Plant physiology is the study of how plants function and stay alive.

Scientists in this field are called plant physiologists. They look at many different things happening inside a plant. This includes how plants use light to make food. It also includes how they grow and respond to the world. They study everything from tiny molecules to the way a whole forest changes with the seasons. This field helps us understand how living things work at every scale.

Plants have a very special way of working to survive.

First, they use pigments to catch light from the sun. Chlorophyll is the main pigment that makes plants look green. Other pigments, like red or orange carotenoids, help catch different types of light too. Next, plants must move things around to stay healthy. Roots soak up minerals and water from the soil. Then, the plant uses special parts called vascular tissue to carry those nutrients up to the leaves. This allows the leaves to make food for the rest of the plant.

Plants also use chemical signals to tell their bodies what to do.

These signals are called hormones, or plant growth regulators. Even though plants do not have special organs for hormones like animals do, these chemicals are still very important. Some hormones tell a plant to grow its stem upwards or its roots downwards. Others help a plant decide when to bloom or when to drop its leaves. For example, a gas called ethylene helps fruit become ripe. These tiny signals control the whole life of the plant.

To grow well, plants need many different elements from their environment.

Some things are needed in large amounts and are called macronutrients. These include nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen. Other things are needed only in very small amounts and are called micronutrients. These include things like iron, zinc, and copper. Plants take these in, often as tiny particles dissolved in water. Even though plants are different from animals, they use many of the same building blocks like carbon and hydrogen. These elements help build everything from strong stems to colorful flowers.

Understanding plant physiology connects to many things we see every day.

The bright colors in your garden come from pigments like anthocyanins. Some of these colors help flowers attract visitors to spread their seeds. We even use plant chemicals to make things for people. For instance, salicylic acid from plants is used to make aspirin. Some plants produce rubber or fuels that humans use for work. By studying how plants work, we learn how to use their amazing powers to help our world.
