Germination

Germination is the way a living thing grows from a seed or a spore.

When a seed sprouts, it becomes a seedling. A seed is a small package made after male and female cells join together. Inside, it holds an embryo, which is a tiny baby plant. Most seeds also have a store of food like starch, oils, or proteins. This food helps the embryo grow before it can make its own. The whole package is wrapped in a protective seed coat.

The way it works starts with a step called imbibition. This is when the seed takes in water from its surroundings. The water makes the seed swell until the seed coat breaks open.

Once the coat is open, the radicle emerges first. The radicle is the primary root that grows down to find water and anchor the plant. Next, the plumule, or embryonic shoot, grows upward. In some plants, like beans, the shoot forms a hook to pull the leaves through the soil. Finally, the cotyledons, which are the seed leaves, unfold and expand.

Scientists study how seeds wake up from a deep sleep called dormancy. Some seeds stay dormant until they feel specific changes in the world. For example, some seeds need the cold of winter to break dormancy. This process is called cold stratification. Other seeds might need the heat of a forest fire to crack their coats.

Even the air around a seed matters. Seeds need oxygen for aerobic respiration to create energy. If the soil is too deep or too wet, the seed might not get enough air. Some plants, like rice, can grow in water by using a hollow part that acts like a snorkel.

Different plants need different settings to grow well. Most common vegetables like to grow in warm soil between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. However, some plants like spinach can grow in much cooler soil at 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some seeds are photoblastic, which means they react to light or darkness. These seeds might wait for a gap in the forest trees to let light reach them. Temperature and water are the most important tools for a seed. If the temperature is not just right, the seed may take much longer to grow.

Understanding germination helps us in gardens and farms. Farmers use the germination rate to see how many seeds will likely grow. If a seed lot has an 85% germination rate, it means 85 out of 100 seeds should sprout.

This helps people know how many seeds to plant in a field. Once the seedling grows its first true leaves, it stops using the stored food from the seed. At this point, it uses photosynthesis to make its own energy from light. Now, the young plant needs a steady supply of water, light, and nutrients to stay healthy.
