Germination is the way a seed grows into a new plant.

A seed is like a tiny package. It holds a baby plant called an embryo. It also has food to help it grow.

The first step is called imbibition. This is when the seed takes in water. The water makes the seed swell. This causes the hard seed coat to break open.

Next, the radicle grows out. The radicle is the first root. It grows down into the soil. This helps the plant stay in place. Then, the plumule grows out. The plumule is the first shoot. It grows up toward the light.

Seeds need more than just water to grow. They also need oxygen from the air. They need the right temperature too. Some seeds need warmth to start. Other seeds need a cold winter first. This helps them break dormancy, which means they wake up from sleep. Once the plant grows leaves, it can make its own food.
