When a seed starts to grow, something special happens. This is called germination.

The first part to come out is the radicle. The radicle is the first root of a plant. It comes out through a tiny hole. This hole is called a micropyle.

The radicle grows down into the soil. It does this because of positive geotropism. This means it grows toward the pull of gravity. Once it is in the dirt, it works hard. The radicle drinks water from the soil. It also takes in nutrients, which are plant foods.

Scientists group radicles into two types. Some point away from a mark on the seed. This mark is called a hilum. We call these antitropous radicles. Others point toward the hilum. These are called syntropous radicles.

Sometimes, a plant can get sick. Dark spots may appear on the radicle. This can cause the seedling to die. A man named Charles Darwin studied this. He wrote a book about how plants move. He wrote about the radicle in 1880.
