A flower has many parts. One part is the sepal. Sepals are usually green. They are like leaves.

Sepals have important jobs. First, they protect the flower when it is a bud. Next, they help hold up the petals. All the sepals together are called the calyx.

In some plants, the sepals are joined. They can form a calyx tube. This tube goes around the petals. Some sepals are also very small. They might look like tiny teeth or ridges.

Sepals can also make food for the plant. They do this through photosynthesis. This is the way plants use light to make food. They do this more slowly than regular leaves.

After a flower blooms, the calyx often dies. But some plants use them in new ways. In some plants, the calyx grows into a fruit.

In others, it grows into a bladder. This bladder can protect the fruit from birds and bugs. Some sepals even grow into thorns to protect seeds.
