A petal is a part of a flower. All the petals together make the corolla.

Petals are modified leaves. They sit in a ring around the flower's middle parts. Often, petals are bright or have odd shapes. This helps them attract pollinators like bugs or birds.

Some petals are separate from each other. We call this apopetalous. Other petals are joined together. This can make a corolla tube.

Some flowers have petals that look the same all around. These are actinomorphic. Other flowers are only the same if you split them down one side. These are zygomorphic.

Petals help plants make more plants. This is called pollination. Plants use many ways to find help. Some have bright colors. Some use sweet smells. Others smell like rotting meat to find flies. Some even show marks that only bugs can see. These marks are called nectar guides.

Grasses often have very small petals or none at all. They use the wind to move pollen instead.
