There are about 3,700 known species. Most of them live in the tropical Americas. One kind lives in Africa. Some bromeliads grow in the ground. These are called terrestrial plants. Others grow on trees. We call these epiphytes.

Many bromeliads make a special shape with their leaves. The leaves form a vase or a tank. This tank catches and holds rain water. This water can help many tiny animals. One tank held a spider and a small frog! Some plants do not have big roots. They use tiny hairs called trichomes to grab water from the air.

These plants can live in many places. They live in wet forests and dry deserts. Some live high in the mountains. The biggest one is called Puya raimondii. It grows very tall. The smallest ones are some Tillandsia species. Bromeliads use many ways to survive in the heat. They can even make their own food at night to save water.
