Poales is a large group of flowering plants.

This group includes many plant families. It has grasses, rushes, and sedges. It also includes bromeliads. Botanists say there are 14 plant families in Poales.

Most of these plants have small flowers. These flowers grow in clusters. We call these clusters inflorescences. Many of these plants use wind to move pollen. Their seeds usually contain starch.

These plants are very important to people. The grass family, or Poaceae, is the biggest. It has 12,070 species. We eat many of these plants. They include rice, wheat, maize, and barley. We also use bamboo for building. Some plants like sugarcane give us flavor.

Other plants in this group are also useful. Bromeliads are often used for decoration. One famous bromeliad is the pineapple. Many wetland plants, like cattails, provide homes for birds. People even use some sedges to weave chair seats.
