Bennettitales were a group of extinct seed plants.

They lived a long time ago. They first appeared about 281 million years ago. They were common during the Mesozoic era. These plants looked like shrubs or small trees.

Some had leaves that looked like feathers. We call these pinnate leaves. Other leaves were narrow and smooth.

Bennettitales had parts that looked like flowers. These parts were used for making seeds. They used cones to make pollen and ovules. An ovule is an unfertilized seed.

Some plants had separate male and female cones. Others had both on one cone. This is called being bisporangiate.

Insects may have helped these plants. Some old bugs had long tongues. These bugs might have fed on nectar. This helped move pollen between plants. Scientists still study how these plants are related to others. Some thought they were close to flowering plants. New data says they are different.
