Pinales

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Pinales is a group of plants. It has only one family. We call this the Pinaceae family, or the pine family.

For a long time, people used the name Pinales for all conifers. Conifers are plants that use seeds. They are not flowering plants. Now, scientists know there are more groups. They see three main orders. These are Pinales, Cupressales, and Araucariales.

Scientists study how these plants are related. They look at how seeds grow. They also look at DNA. DNA is a tiny code inside living things. Looking at DNA helps them make better groups.

There are about 1,000 kinds of gymnosperms living today. Gymnosperms are a large group of seed plants. This group includes cycads and ginkgos. It also includes the pine family. Some scientists still debate how to group them. It is a big task to get it right.
