Pinales

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Pinales is a special group of plants. It is a group that contains only one single family. This is the Pinaceae family, which we often call the pine family.

For a long time, people used the name Pinales to mean all conifers. Conifers are seed plants that do not have flowers. Scientists now know that the group is more complex. They recognize three separate orders of conifers: Pinales, Cupressales, and Araucariales. This new way of grouping them has been widely accepted since 2022.

To group these plants, scientists look at how they grow. They study how seeds develop on the plant. Some plants have seeds that are exposed to receive pollen directly. Other plants have seeds that are enclosed.

In the 1800s, scientists like Brown and Brongniart studied these differences. They used terms like gymnosperms to describe these seed plants. This helped them separate different types of living things. By looking at these physical traits, they could build a map of how plants are related.

Many famous scientists helped shape our understanding of Pinales. In 1825, Brown noticed the different ways seeds grow. Later, in 1830, Lindley divided plants into two tribes. He called them Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. In 1853, Lindley described a class called Gymnogens. This class included the Pinaceae family. Other experts like Pilger and Cronquist worked on these groups in the 1900s. They all tried to find the best way to organize the plant world.

There are about 1,000 kinds of gymnosperms living on Earth today. These are spread across 12 different families and 83 genera. The Pinidae group, which includes Pinales, contains about 70 genera and 600 species. In some newer models, Pinales is even smaller. It might only include the Pinaceae family with 11 genera and 225 species.

Scientists use molecular phylogenetics to study these numbers. This means they look at the tiny DNA code inside the plants. This helps them see the true history of how the plants changed.

Understanding Pinales helps us see how all land plants are connected. Gymnosperms are a sister group to angiosperms, which are flowering plants. Most of the plants you see in a garden are angiosperms. Conifers like pines are a different branch of the same tree.

Even though scientists still debate some groups, they are working together. The Gymnosperm Phylogeny Group was started in 2018 to help find answers. They want to reach a consensus on how to name every plant. This work helps us understand the history of life on our planet.
