The Pinaceae are a large family of trees and shrubs.

This family includes many famous trees. You might know cedars, firs, or spruces. Most of these trees stay green all year. However, some types like larches lose their needles.

These trees use cones to make seeds. The female cones are large and woody. They have many scales. Each scale holds two seeds with small wings.

Most seeds move by wind. Small seeds, under 90 milligrams, use the wind. Larger seeds may be moved by birds.

Living in cold places requires special tools. Many Pinaceae live in snowy forests. Their cone shape helps them shed heavy snow. They also have a waxy coating on their leaves. This helps them keep water inside.

Trees also need to stay safe from bugs. They use resins to defend themselves. Resin is a sticky substance. It is kept in tiny tubes called resin ducts. Resin can trap insects or seal a wound.
