Pines have special leaves called needles. These needles grow in bunches. We call these bunches fascicles. Most bunches have two to five needles. These needles stay green all year long.

Pines make woody cones. They have both male and female cones on one tree. The male cones are small. They let out pollen. The female cones are much larger. They hold the seeds. Each cone scale holds two seeds. Some seeds have wings. The wind carries them to new spots. Some birds also move the seeds.

These trees live for a very long time. Many live for 100 to 1,000 years. One tree is about 4,800 years old!

Some pines need fire to grow. Heat melts the resin, which is a sticky sap. This helps the cones open. Then the seeds can fall out. People use pine wood for many things. It is used for floors and windows. People also eat pine nuts.
