It grows in the mountains of western North America. This tree is the most common pine in that area. It grows in 16 different U.S. states. It also grows in parts of Canada.

You can tell this tree apart by its bark. Old trees have thick, orange-red bark. It has large plates and black cracks. Young trees have dark, brownish bark. Some people say the bark smells like vanilla. Others say it smells like turpentine.

These trees have bright green needles. The needles grow in small bundles called fascicles. There are usually three needles in each bundle. The tree also makes long, egg-shaped cones. Each part of the cone has a sharp point.
