This tree likes moist soil. It also likes high humidity, which means the air is damp. It is a deciduous tree. This means its leaves fall off each year. The leaves are rough on top. In early spring, small flowers grow in clusters. These flowers are wind-pollinated. This means the wind helps them make seeds. The seeds are called samaras. They have tiny wings to help them fly.

Some wych elms have very long roots. One tree in Scotland had roots 110 metres long! People love the wood from this tree. It has pretty colors and a shiny look. In old France, people even used the bark as a medicine. Now, the tree is hard to find in many places. This is because of Dutch elm disease. This is a sickness that kills the trees.
