Arecales

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Arecales is a group of flowering plants.

This group includes palms and their relatives. For a long time, people used a different name. They called this group Principes. That name means "the first."

Most people use the name Arecales now. Scientists use a system called taxonomy to name plants. This is a way to group living things. In 2016, a new system was used. It put a plant called Dasypogonaceae in this group. This happened after studies showed it was a sister to palms. Some people still argue about this choice. In the past, other systems had different ideas. One system in 1981 put them in a subclass. Another system in 1992 used the name Areciflorae. The group also belongs to the monocots. Monocots are a large group of plants.

Some systems also call the palm family Palmae. The name Principes is still used for a journal. That journal is for the International Palm Society. It changed its name to Palms in 1999.
