Scientists divide these plants into two main groups. The first group is called gymnosperms. These plants have naked seeds. This means the seeds are not inside a fruit.

The second group is called angiosperms. These are the flowering plants. They are the largest group of seed plants. Angiosperms keep their seeds inside a fruit. Long ago, different plants lived on Earth. Some were called seed ferns. They were one of the first successful land plants. Many of these plants are now extinct. They are no longer living today.
