Cattails are plants that live in wet places. They grow in swamps and mud. You might know them as bulrushes or reedmace.

These plants have long, thin leaves. They also have tall flower spikes. The top part has tiny male flowers. The bottom part is a thick spike of female flowers. This spike looks like a sausage.

When the seeds are ripe, the spike turns into soft fluff. The wind blows the seeds away to new spots. This helps the plants spread.

Many animals use cattails. Muskrats use the plants to build dens. They also use them to make platforms for eating.

People can use many parts of the plant. The roots have starch. People can turn this starch into flour. Some people eat the young stems like asparagus.
