People call them cattails. They grow in wet mud and swamps.

These plants have long, thin leaves. They grow tall in the water. The flowers look like brown spikes.

At the top, there are tiny male flowers. Below them, there are many female flowers.

When the seeds are ready, they turn into soft fluff. The wind blows the fluff away. This helps the seeds travel to new places.

Many animals like these plants. Muskrats use them to build homes. Some people even eat parts of the plant. It is a very useful plant.
