It loves wet places like marshes. It can grow in shallow water or deep water. It can even grow as a floating mat. The tall stems have long, broad leaves. In late summer, the plant makes dark purple flowers. Later, it grows small seeds with silky hairs. These hairs help the seeds move to new spots.

In North America, some reeds are a problem. These are non-native plants from Europe. They are very strong and grow fast. They can crowd out other plants like wild rice. They also block light from reaching the ground. The reed makes a chemical called gallic acid. When light hits this acid, it turns into a toxin. This toxin can hurt other small plants. To get rid of them, people may burn the plants. They might have to burn them for two or three years. This is because the roots are very deep and strong.
