Phragmites australis

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The common reed is a tall grass that lives in wet places. It belongs to the grass family called Poaceae. You can find this plant in many parts of the world. It loves damp ground and standing water. It can grow in water that is quite deep. It can even form a floating mat on top of the water. These plants often grow together in huge groups called reed beds.

This plant has a very busy way of growing. It can spread by using horizontal runners under the ground. These runners put down new roots at regular spots. The stems grow straight up and can become very tall. The tallest plants live where the summers are hot and the soil is rich. In late summer, the reed grows dark purple flowers. These flowers are part of a shape called a panicle. Later, tiny seeds appear with silky hairs to help them travel.

Scientists study different types of these reeds to see where they come from. In North America, there is a lot of talk about these plants. Some reeds arrived from Europe in the 1800s. These European reeds are much stronger than the native ones. The native kind is called Phragmites americanus. The European kind is called Phragmites australis subsp. australis. The strong European plants can crowd out native plants like wild rice or orchids. They can even turn a whole area into a place with only one kind of plant.

These strong reeds can be quite hard to manage. They release a substance called gallic acid into the area. When ultraviolet light hits this acid, it turns into a toxin. This toxin can hurt other small plants and seedlings. To stop them, people sometimes have to burn the reeds. You might have to burn them for two or three seasons. This is because the roots are very deep and strong. In some places, like the Mississippi River Delta, these reeds help keep the shorelines steady.

Even though they can be tough, people use the reed in many ways. You can eat many parts of the whole plant. Young stems can be boiled or turned into flour. You can even eat the hardened sap from damaged stems. Some people use the stems to make eco-friendly drinking straws. In Europe, people use the reeds to make thatch for roofs. The root hairs are also great at filtering impurities from waste water. This makes them useful for natural water treatment systems.
