These plants are very important to our world. They provide food and homes for many living things.

Most Poales have small flowers. These flowers are often tucked inside leaves called bracts. The flowers usually grow in clusters called inflorescences. Some species have very tiny clusters with only one flower. Many of these plants use the wind to move pollen. This is called wind pollination. The seeds of these plants often contain starch. Starch is a type of stored energy for the plant.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. In the 1883 Bentham & Hooker system, they used different names. Early systems used names like Graminales or Glumiflorae. The APG system helps us group them today. The first APG system was made in 1998. It used the name commelinoids. Later, the APG III system came out in 2009. The newest APG IV system was released in 2016.

We can find clues about their past in fossils. Some fossils date back to the late Cretaceous period. These fossils include ancient pollen and fruits. Some studies suggest they began nearly 115 million years ago. This might have happened in South America. The Poaceae family is the largest in the order. It has 12,070 different species. The Cyperaceae family has 5,500 species. Bromeliaceae has 3,170 species. Eriocaulaceae has 1,150 species.

Poales plants are part of your daily life. The grass family includes staples like rice, wheat, and maize. We also use barley and millet for food. Bamboo is a grass used for building things. Sugarcane and lemongrass are used for seasoning. Many people grow bromeliads as pretty plants. The pineapple is a famous bromeliad we eat. In wetlands, cattails provide homes for waterfowl. People even use sedges to weave chair seats.
