Bromeliaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bromeliads are a huge family of flowering plants. There are about 3,700 known species in this group. Most of these plants live in the tropical Americas. Only one species, Pitcairnia feliciana, lives in tropical West Africa.

These plants can grow in many different places. Some live on the ground as terrestrial plants. Others grow on trees as epiphytes. Some even grow on rocks. They can live from sea level up to 4,200 meters high. This range includes rainforests, cloud forests, and even dry deserts.

Many bromeliads have a special way to find water. Some have leaves that grow in a vase shape. These leaves form a structure called a tank. The tank catches and holds rainwater.

This water can create a tiny home for many animals. One tank held a spider, a centipede, and even a small frog. Other plants use tiny hairs called trichomes to grab water. These hairs help them collect moisture from the air in cloud forests. In the desert, these same hairs help reflect sunlight.

Bromeliads have many ways to survive in dry heat. Many use a special way to make food called CAM photosynthesis. This stands for crassulacean acid metabolism. This method lets them open their breathing pores at night. By doing this, they do not lose too much water during the hot day.

They also have leaves with parallel veins. The outer layer of the leaf contains silica. These tools help them live in very tough environments.

Scientists believe these plants began about 100 million years ago. They likely started in the tepuis of the Guiana Shield. The family grew into many different groups over a long time. Many species appeared when the Andes mountains rose up. This mountain growth happened between 14.2 and 8.7 million years ago. The new mountains changed the weather and created new homes. This helped many bromeliads and their pollinators, like hummingbirds, to grow.

You might already know one famous bromeliad. The pineapple is a member of this family!

While the pineapple grows in the ground, other types like Spanish moss hang from trees. The largest bromeliad is called Puya raimondii. It grows a very tall flower spike. On the other side, some Tillandsia species are very small. Whether they are huge or tiny, bromeliads are amazing survivors.
