Most pineapples grow in warm places. They are used in many different kinds of food and sweet treats.

Making a pineapple is a very interesting thing that happens. A single plant can grow up to 200 flowers. These flowers grow in a spiral pattern on a tall spike. As the flowers grow, they join together to form one large fruit. This is called a multiple fruit.

The fruit often has two interlocking patterns of spirals. One direction might have 8 spirals and the other might have 13. These are known as Fibonacci numbers. To grow more plants, people use side shoots called suckers. These suckers can grow from the base or the top of the fruit.

People have grown pineapples for a very long time. The plant is native to South America. Evidence shows people used them as food in Peru as far back as 1200 BC. The Tupi-Guarani and Carib people used them as a staple food.

In the 1500s, explorers like Gonzalo Hernandez Oviedo described the fruit. Christopher Columbus was the first European to see one in 1493. He called it a "pine of the Indians." Later, the name "pineapple" became common in English. This happened because people often called any round fruit an "apple."

Pineapples have a long history of being very special. When they first reached Europe, they were symbols of luxury. They were so expensive that people used them for decoration at dinner parties.
