This plant is known for being very long-lived. Some specimens in France have survived for 200 years. The plant has many spiny branches and glossy, narrow leaves. It produces bright red or white flowers with three to seven petals. These flowers are important because they eventually turn into the fruit we eat.

Many different cultures find this fruit very important in their stories and history.

Inside the fruit, there is a very interesting way things are organized. The fruit has a hard outer skin called a pericarp. Below that is a white, spongy layer called the mesocarp, or albedo. The inside is divided into chambers that are not quite even. These chambers hold many seeds that are not attached to the inner wall. Each seed has a thick, fleshy coat called a sarcotesta. A single pomegranate can hold between 200 and 1,400 of these seeds.

People have been growing pomegranates for a very long time. Ancient Iranians likely first domesticated the plant about 5,000 years ago. The fruit is native to the region near the Caucasus and the Iranian plateau. This area includes modern countries like Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Archaeologists have found pomegranate remains from the Neolithic period in Israel. They even found a large, dry pomegranate in an ancient Egyptian tomb.

Today, pomegranates are grown all over the world. India and China are the leading producers of this fruit. Other big producers include Iran, Turkey, and the United States. In the Northern Hemisphere, the fruit is usually in season from September to February. In the Southern Hemisphere, the season runs from March to May. Some varieties, like the dwarf *Punica granatum var. nana*, are grown just for decoration. This small variety can even be used to make bonsai trees.

We use pomegranates in many tasty ways in our cooking. The juice can be sweet or tart because it is acidic. In Persian cooking, people make a thick syrup called pomegranate molasses. This syrup adds a sweet and sour flavor to stews and sauces. In Mexico, the red seeds are used to decorate a dish called chiles en nogada. The red seeds help the dish match the colors of the Mexican flag. You can also find pomegranate juice in many drinks and desserts around the world.
