These plants can live a long time. Some can live for 200 years! The plant has many spiny branches and glossy leaves. It can grow flowers that are bright red or white. These flowers have three to seven petals.

The fruit has a thick, hard skin. Inside, there are many small chambers. These chambers hold juicy seeds. We call the fleshy part of the seed the sarcotesta. A single fruit can have between 200 and 1,400 seeds.

The juice from these seeds tastes sweet or sour. This tart taste comes from a low pH, which means it is acidic. The juice also has polyphenols. These can leave a red stain on cloth.

Pomegranates first grew in the region of Iran. People began growing them about 5,000 years ago. Today, they grow in many places like India, China, and the United States. People use the fruit in many ways. They make juice, syrups, and sauces. In Mexico, seeds are used to decorate a dish called chiles en nogada. This dish uses red seeds to match the color of the flag.
