Quince

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A quince is a fruit that grows on small trees or shrubs. The fruit is bright yellow and looks like a pear. Most quinces are very hard and tart. They have a strong smell. People often cook them with sugar. This makes sweet jams or jellies. Some people also make a thick paste called quince cheese.

Quince trees are very hardy. They can grow in sun or shade. They can also grow in many kinds of soil. To grow flowers, the tree needs a cold period each year. The fruit ripens in the late autumn. It must be picked before the first frost.

In the spring, the tree grows pretty flowers. These flowers are white or pink. Some people grow quince as a bonsai. A bonsai is a tiny tree grown in a small pot.

The seeds of a quince contain nitriles. If someone eats a large amount of seeds, they can be toxic. This is because the seeds can make a gas called hydrogen cyanide. In the stomach, acid or enzymes cause this change. Most people eat the fruit without any trouble.
