Most sumacs are shrubs or small trees. They can grow up to 20 feet tall. They have small flowers and red fruits. These fruits are called drupes. They grow in thick clusters at the ends of branches. Some people call these clusters sumac bobs.

People use sumac in many ways. Many cooks use the dried fruits to make a spice. They grind the fruit into a red powder. This powder has a tart taste like a lemon. It is very popular in Arab cooking. People use it on meat, rice, and salads. You can even make a drink from it. It tastes like pink lemonade.

Sumac is also used to make leather. The leaves and bark have tannins. Tannins are parts of a plant used to make leather flexible. In the past, sumac was used as a red dye. It could even turn white marble purple if it got wet!

Be careful not to mix it up with poison sumac. Poison sumac has white fruits instead of red ones.
