Nigella sativa

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Nigella sativa is a plant with small black seeds.

People call it black cumin or black caraway. It grows in parts of Europe and Asia. It can also grow in North Africa.

The plant grows tall. It has thin leaves. The flowers are pale blue or white. They have five to ten petals. The fruit is a large capsule. This capsule holds many seeds.

People use the seeds as a spice. They add them to bread and meat. Some people put them in salads. In Bengali cooking, they are part of a five-spice mix. They are also used in a cheese called majdouleh.

These seeds have a very long history. People found them in ancient Egypt. They were even in the tomb of Tutankhamun. A doctor named Avicenna wrote about them long ago.

The seeds contain oils. These oils make up 32% to 40% of the seeds. These oils help give the seeds their scent. Some studies look at how the seeds affect blood pressure. They also look at how they affect cholesterol.
