Nigella sativa

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Nigella sativa is a special flowering plant.

Many people call it black cumin or black caraway. It belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. This plant grows in western Asia and eastern Europe. You can find it in places like Turkey, Iran, and Iraq. It also grows in parts of North Africa.

People use the seeds as a tasty spice. This makes the plant very important for cooking around the world.

The plant has a very specific way it grows. It grows quite tall with thin, divided leaves. The flowers are delicate and pretty. They are usually pale blue or white. Most flowers have between five and ten petals.

After the flowers, the plant makes a large fruit. This fruit is an inflated capsule. Inside the capsule, there are many small seeds. These seeds are the part people use for flavor.

Humans have used this plant for a very long time.

We have found seeds in ancient Egypt. They were even found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. In Turkey, seeds were found in a Hittite flask. A long time ago, a Persian doctor named Avicenna wrote about it. He wrote in a book called The Canon of Medicine. He described it as a way to help with breathing.

The seeds are full of interesting things.

Oils make up 32% to 40% of the total seeds. These oils include things like linoleic acid and oleic acid. There are also special scents called aromatics. These include thymoquinone and carvacrol. The seeds also have protein and alkaloids inside them. These parts give the seeds their unique smell and taste.

You might taste these seeds in many foods. In Palestine, people make a bitter paste called qizha. They use roasted seeds in curries and vegetables. Some people use them to flavor bread. In Bengali cooking, they are in a five-spice mix. You can even find them in a braided cheese called majdouleh.

In the United States, the FDA says they are safe to eat.
