People love its sweet smell and taste. It is used in many foods like candy and tea. You can also find it in some alcoholic drinks. This plant is very important in many different cultures around the world.

The plant grows as a soft, yearly plant. It can grow to be about one meter tall. The leaves at the bottom are long and simple. Higher up, the leaves look feathery or lacy.

The flowers are white or yellow. They grow in large, thick clusters called umbels. The fruit is a dry, curved seed called an aniseed. These seeds are what people use for flavor.

People have grown anise for a very long time. It was first grown in the Middle East. Egypt has grown anise for about 4,000 years. People brought it to Europe to use as medicine. In 1597, John Gerard wrote about it in a book. He said the seeds could help with stomach issues. Pliny the Elder also wrote about using it for sleep.

Anise seeds contain a very strong oil. This oil has a part called anethole. Anethole is what gives the plant its unique smell.

Scientists can get this oil using steam or special gases. The oil makes up about 2 to 7 percent of the seed. In 1999, the world made 8 tons of this oil. This was much less than the 400 tons of star anise made that year.

You can find anise in many treats you might know. Some sweets are called aniseed balls or twists.

In Mexico, it is used in warm drinks like atole de anís. It is even used in Italian meats like sausage. Long ago, British train builders used anise oil in steam engines. If the engine got too hot, the oil would smell. This smell warned the workers that there was a problem.
