Rocket is a leafy plant with a very sharp flavor. People often call it arugula or salad rocket. This plant belongs to the Brassicaceae family. It is native to Asia and the Mediterranean regions.

Many people love it in salads because of its unique taste. It is a popular vegetable found in many grocery stores today.

The plant has a very specific way it grows. It is an annual plant, which means it lives for one year. The leaves are deeply lobed with several small side parts.

Small flowers grow in a group called a corymb. These petals are creamy white with purple veins and yellow stamens. The plant produces a fruit called a siliqua. This is a long pod that holds many seeds inside.

People have grown rocket for a very long time. It was used as a food in Italy during Roman times. Ancient writers like Virgil and Ovid wrote about it. Some stories say it was used as an aphrodisiac. This means people thought it could increase desire. Because of this, some say monasteries once forbade growing it.

However, Charlemagne still listed it as a good herb for gardens.

Rocket grows well in many different places now. It can reach its full size in 40 to 50 days. Warm weather helps it grow quickly. If there is a light frost, the green leaves will turn red.

In India, the mature seeds are called Gargeer. This name is also used in Arabic for the fresh leaves. In the Sonora desert, the plant can actually become an invasive species. This means it spreads very quickly in that area.

You can eat many parts of this plant. The leaves, flowers, and even the seeds are edible. In Italy, it is often a topping for pizza.

In Turkey, people eat it raw with fish and lemon juice. Some people even press the seeds to make taramira oil. This oil is used for pickling or cooking. Rocket is also very healthy for you. It is a rich source of folate and vitamin K.
