This plant belongs to the Boraginaceae family. It is native to the warm Mediterranean region. Today, it grows in many other places too. You can find it in gardens across Europe. It grows well in countries like France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Even though it is an annual plant, it often stays in gardens. It does this by dropping seeds that grow new plants every year.

The way borage grows is quite interesting to watch. The plant can reach a height of 1 meter. Its stems and leaves are covered in tiny hairs.

The flowers have five narrow petals that look like little triangles. Most of the time, these flowers are a bright blue color. Sometimes you might see pink or white flowers instead. The blue color is the strongest trait in the plant's genes.

As the flowers age, they can change from pink to blue. They grow in large groups that bloom at the same time.

People have used borage for a very long time. Long ago, people thought it could help with memory. The writer Homer once mentioned a drink that caused forgetfulness. Later, the famous thinker Francis Bacon wrote about its spirit. Even Queen Catherine Parr used it for her health.

In many places, borage is a popular food. In Germany, it is used in a green sauce called grüne Soße. In Italy, people cook the leaves to fill ravioli. In Poland and Russia, it even flavors pickled gherkins.

Borage is also very important for science and oil. The seeds are full of a special oil. This oil is between 26% and 38% of the seed.

It is the richest known source of something called GLA. GLA is a fatty acid that is good for the body. The oil also has other fats like palmitic acid and oleic acid. Because of this, many people buy starflower oil as a supplement. However, we must be careful because the plant has natural chemicals called alkaloids. These can be hard on the liver if there is too much.

You might see borage working in a garden right now. Many gardeners use it as a companion plant. This means it grows near other plants to help them. It can help protect strawberries, spinach, and legumes.

It can even act as a trap crop for tomatoes. It confuses certain moths so they do not lay eggs on the tomato plants. Bees also love borage because the flowers have lots of nectar. This nectar helps bees make a light and delicate honey.
