It belongs to a group of plants called the Asteraceae family. People often call it a bachelor's button because of its round shape. It is also known as a cornflower because it used to grow in grain fields. This plant is an annual, which means it lives for just one growing season. It is native to Europe, but it now grows in North America and Australia too.

Watching a cornflower grow is a very interesting thing that happens. The plant grows tall stems that are grey-green and branched. It has long leaves that are shaped like a lance. During the summer, it grows flowerheads that are about 1.5 to 3 cm wide. These heads have a ring of large petals called ray florets. In the center, there is a cluster of smaller parts called disc florets. The deep blue color comes from a pigment called protocyanin.

Scientists have studied this plant for a very long time. A man named Carl Linnaeus gave it its scientific name in 1753. The name Centaurea comes from the Greek word for a centaur. The second part of its name, cyanus, comes from a Greek word for dark blue. In the late 1500s, some people called it a hurtsickle. They believed the plant could blunt the tools farmers used to cut crops.

Cornflowers are very important for many living things in nature. They produce very sweet nectar with a sugar content of 34%.

Because the nectar is so sweet, bees love to visit them. The seeds are a favorite food for the European goldfinch bird. The plant can also help farmers protect their cabbage. It attracts a tiny insect called a parasitoid that eats pests. This can help crops grow better without using as many chemicals.

Humans find many ways to use the cornflower in daily life. You can actually eat the petals if they are raw, dried, or cooked.
